Piper served as Pastor for Preaching and Vision of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota for 33 years. When he and his older sister were still young, the Pipers moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where he spent the remainder of his youth and graduated from Wade Hampton High School. At six years old, Piper was converted to faith in Christ at his mother’s knee while on vacation in Florida.

In college, he was originally on the pre-med track, only to decide to go into ministry during a bout of sickness, while listening to the sermons of Dr. Harold John Ockenga over the radio, from his hospital bed.
He then completed a Master of Divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. While at Fuller, he took several courses from Daniel Fuller and through him discovered the writings of Jonathan Edwards.
Lewis, Edwards and Fuller are noted influences in Piper’s life and ministry. His dissertation, Love Your Enemies, was published by Cambridge University Press and Baker Book House.
